KEI Analysis

KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) is a formula for measuring the effectiveness of a keyword. The formula was devised by Sumantra Roy. However, this figure also depends upon the number of searches and competition, but with a difference. This formula analyzes the number of searches and competition in such a way that if the searches increase, KEI increases; and if the competition increases, KEI decreases. Higher the KEI, more profitable will be the keyword. However, it becomes polluted when the number of search results are used as the number of competitors.

Determining Traffic

Determining traffic for a keyword is quite important before targeting it. Along with the competition stats, it lets you make out the niches present in any industry. Besides, it lets you predict (to some extent) how much traffic you can expect if you promote a website around a particular keyword. There are two known sources for determining traffic. Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool (now a part of Yahoo Search Engine) and WordTracker. When talking about accuracy, Wordtracker monitors the queries on some meta search engines that actually render it inaccurate . Reason? They love for each other very much. As the leader of this birdmen area as a king and queen, they have a big power in this area, to control other birdmen families which live under them.

One day, birdmen's wife got pregnant and she felt that she would like to have some food as different as she have never had it before in the past. Then, she made her decision to fly into the sky, while her husband is still in meditation to get his advanced power from the God. She flied with her wings away from her place, looking for the food she desire to eat, but she didn't know what kind of food she like to have. As she think it’s her good luck to have her baby in this time. She has many things in her mind she flied until crossed to the prohibited place of Dragon angel.

Suddenly, she looked down to the land and saw the dragon's queen playing with her friends near the purl river. Just putting crap there, and stuffing the search results of a search engine is what Google hates.

If the visitors are given carp information, they will never be good buyers, or will become resistant to the convincing power of the advertisers where your AdSense code is directing them to. Google will sense that the traffic form your website is of poor quality, and you will get a shock of SmartPricing.

7 - Is All the Above Stuff Illegal?

Who said that? I happened to make a very informational site, and then to help bring some visitors to my highly informational site, I used the adwords to promote it. Of course, since this site is just sprouting, I don't have the capital to bid on the $X keywords, so I am starting out slowly, and bidding on terms with lower volumes of searches.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together -- but not too closely!

Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have.

Though popular modern sources link unspecified Greco-Roman February holidays alleged to be devoted to fertility and love to St Valentine's Day, Professor Jack Oruch of the University of Kansas argued that prior to Chaucer, no links between the Saints named Valentinus and romantic love existed. Thus, it is immaterial to the history of Valentine's Day whether or not in the ancient Athenian calendar the period between mid-January and mid-February was the month of Gamelion, dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.

In Ancient Rome, Lupercalia, observed February 13 through 15, was an archaic rite connected to fertility, without overtones of romance. Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome. The more general Festival of Juno Februa, meaning "Juno the purifier "or "the chaste Juno," was celebrated on February 13-14. Pope Gelasius I (492-496) abolished Lupercalia.

While it is a common opinion that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to christianize celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia, no connection has been demonstrated.

Chaucer's love birds

While some claim the first recorded association of Valentine's Day with romantic love is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer[18] this may be the result of misinterpretation. Chaucer wrote:

This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for a marriage was signed on May 2, 1381. (When they were married eight months later, he was 13 or 14, and she was 14.)

Readers have uncritically assumed that Chaucer was referring to February 14 as Valentine's Day; however, mid-February is an unlikely time for birds to be mating in England. Henry Ansgar Kelly has pointed out that in the liturgical calendar, May 2 is the saints' day for Valentine of Genoa. This St. Valentine was an early bishop of Genoa who died around AD 307.

Chaucer's Parliament of Foules is set in a fictional context of an old tradition, but in fact there was no such tradition before Chaucer. The speculative explanation of sentimental customs, posing as historical fact, had their origins among eighteenth-century antiquaries, notably Alban Butler, the author of Butler's Lives of Saints, and have been perpetuated even by respectable modern scholars. Most notably, "the idea that Valentine's Day customs perpetuated those of the Roman Lupercalia has been accepted uncritically and repeated, in various forms, up to the present"

Medieval period and the English Renaissance

Using the language of the law courts for the rituals of courtly love, a "High Court of Love" was established in Paris on Valentine's Day in 1400. The court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading.

The earliest surviving valentine is a fifteenth-century rondeau written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his "valentined" wife, which commences.

Saint Valentine

Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine's Days. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae). Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome. and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino).

The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him. Some sources say the Valentine linked to romance is Valentine of Rome, others say Valentine of Terni.

No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time a Saint Valentine became linked to romance in the fourteenth century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were utterly lost.

In the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, the feastday of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar and relegated to particular (local or even national) calendars for the following reason: "Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14. "The feast day is still celebrated in Balzan and in Malta where relics of the saint are claimed to be found, and also throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics who follow the older, pre-Vatican II calendar.

The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were excerpted by Bede and briefly expounded in Legenda Aurea. According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.

Legenda Aurea still providing no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine."

One of the most famous learning institutions for Thai medicine is Wat Pho in Bangkok where Thai massage is still taught today.

Thai Massage is an ancient form of bodywork practiced in Thailand for over 2500 years, and little known to the west until recently. It's ancient origins are linked to Yoga, Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine, as well as the local indigenous healing practices of ancient Siam. It is still used in Thailand today as part of the healing regime for many different ailments of the body. This Thai Massage is a combination of gentle rocking, range of motion, acupressure, refloxology, energy work and stretching, a form of passive yoga. Joints are loosened and opened through manipulation and peripheral stimulation, muscles are stretched, internal organs are toned, vitality is increased and a deep state of relaxation can be achieved. The work is very rhythmical and meditative, enabling both the client and practitioner to voyage together into deeper realms of consciousness.

The massage is done on a floor mat with the receiver wearing loose, comfortable clothing. This gives the practitioner a lot of leverage and the ability to use their body very effectively, it also allows for movements that are not as effective, or impossible on a table. Therapists are trained to respect everyone's varied amount of flexibility and can therefore benefit the limber athlete, as well as those who are not very limber, by stretching everyone to their own personal limits.

There are four positions in Thai Massage. The "front" or prone position, "side" position, "back" or supine, and "seated" position. The majority of the treatment is in the front position, with a lot of the treatment on the legs. Taking the legs through a complete range of motion and working on the energy lines of the legs has a very beneficial effect on people with low back problems. The back neck and shoulders, which seem to be the area most westerners have problems with, can be worked in all the positions. Thai Massage is concerned with the whole body, the stretching movements open the joints, increase flexibility and release body tension.

The Thai's believe in long treatments, they say one hour is good, two hours is better, three hours is best. Time seems to go quickly in these sessions and a three hour treatment never seems to last that long whether I am the therapist or the client. The work can be very effective even in short sessions. Thai Massage is based on system of energy lines called Sen, which follows energy as it flows through the form of the body. There are said to be 72,000 Sen which cover the entire body 10 of which are the major ones that are used in actual practice. The Sen are closely associated with the Nadis of Ayurvedic medicine and the Meridians of Chinese acupuncture, all of which can produce internal effects from stimulation of external points on the body.

In the 1690's the French liason to the Thai court in Ayutthia wrote, "When any person is sick in Siam, he begins by causing his whole body to be molded by one who is skilled herein." The tradition has been mostly an oral one and handed down from teacher to student quite often within the family. The little written texts of medicine and massage were inscribed in stone by King Rama III in 1832 and set into the walls around Wat Pho, which continues to be a center for education in Traditional Thai massage and medicine.

The origins of Thai Massage are believed to have come to us 2500 years ago through Jivaka Komarbhacca, who is still revered as the "Father Doctor." He was a physician, friend and contemporary of the Buddha and a well known figure in the Pali canon (Buddhist religious documents). A prayer to father Doctor begins and ends the day in the schools I have studied at, and all or part of the prayer is said before a massage.

A translation of this Pali prayer is: "We invite the spirit of our Founder, the Father Doctor Shivago, who comes to us though his saintly life. Please bring to us the knowledge of all nature, that this prayer will show us the true medicine of the universe. In the name of this mantra, we respect your help and pray that through our bodies you will bring wholeness and health to the body of our client.

The Goddess of healing dwells in the heavens high, while mankind stays in the world below. In the name of the Founder, may the heavens be reflected in the earth below so that this healing medicine may encircle the world. We pray for the one whom we touch, that he will be happy and that any illness will be released from him."

Most people believe that all of their marital or relational problems can be solved through “communication.” We believe that deception is difficult to achieve, that misleading a partner requires a lot of effort and thought, and that romantic partners can tell when a lover is lying, and so on. None of these widely held beliefs, however, are supported by the evidence. Rather, our romantic relationships are held together by a delicate balance of both candor and deceit. And both are critical to making our intimate relationships work.

In reality, romantic relationships entail two important features which allow deception to flourish: abundant opportunity, as well as the need to deceive. As we get close to another person, we intentionally and unintentionally provide them with a great deal of information about who we are, revealing ourselves through both our words and deeds. Creating this kind of intimacy or shared knowledge is critical, as it serves as the foundation for a lot of important rewards. Through our close relationships, we create gains with respect to our health, wealth, and emotional well-being.

Because relationships provide so many important rewards, it should come as no surprise that people are inclined to view their romantic partners in a positive light. We place a lot of trust in our romantic partners. We think we know them well. But while our trust surely provides us with a sense of security and comfort, it also lays the ground for deceit. For as we trust our partners more, we also become more confident but less accurate at determining when the truth is being told.

Every relevant study attests to the fact that lovers are terrible at telling when their partners are lying. In fact, detecting deception with anyone is difficult to do, but lovers manage to take this general failure to a spectacular low. Again, as we become more confident that we can tell when a lover is lying, the exact opposite turns out to be true. This “truth-bias” or “blind faith” provides the perfect opportunity for romantic partners to engage in deception. Not only do close relationships create a wonderful opportunity for deception to occur, they also create the need. While romantic relationships offer many rewards, they also tend to be overly constrictive. Most everyone has felt the constraints of a close relationship from time to time; quite simply you are no longer free to do what you want, when you want, and with whom you want. So intimacy provides tremendous rewards, but at an enormous cost – the loss of your freedom and autonomy.

Lying to a romantic partner helps us deal with the constraints that our intimate relationships impose. Quite frankly, deceiving a romantic partner turns out to be the most efficient and effective way of maintaining the rewards we get from our romantic relationships while pursuing extra-relational goals and activities behind a partner’s back.

How do we decide when to lie and when to tell the truth? Well, most of the time we do not intentionally think about misleading our partners. Rather such decisions are governed by our emotions and just seem to happen when the right situation presents itself. Often a sense of excitement, opportunity, and exhilaration can lead us down paths we had no intention of traveling. A sense of fear, loss, and trepidation, on the other hand, prompt us to cover-up what we’ve done and be more conservative in the short-term. Luckily our emotions are very good at reading situations and keeping our deceptive behavior within limits. Our emotions prompt us to regain some of our freedoms while also allowing us to maintain the benefits we get from our intimate relationships.

When you take a step back and put it altogether, the picture that emerges tends to be rather ironic. Because our romantic relationships are so rewarding yet constrictive, we are simultaneously more truthful and more deceptive with those we love. Additionally, we place the most trust in the person who is most likely to deceive us, just as we are most likely to deceive the person who loves and trusts us the most. These are just a few of the paradoxes that emerge when taking a close look at the use of deception in our romantic relationships. Most of what is uncovered runs counter to our most cherished beliefs about love and romance; that is, the idea that complete openness and intimacy are a central and defining feature of being in love and trusts us the most. How to Pay Off Credit Card Debt

When considering many of the inventions that we use regularly, the credit card is a relatively new idea; the first credit card that could be used at more than one merchant was issued in 1950. Frank McNamara started the “Diner's Club” credit card company with about 200 card holders, and it was also the start of the vicious cycle many credit card users fall victim to: charging purchases when you don't have the cash to buy them, and then struggling to keep up with the monthly payments because of high interest rates and spending outside of your means.

The average credit card debt held by the typical American is over $8500. As any credit card holder knows, the interest on a credit card causes you to pay more than double the amount you've spent on the card, if you only send the minimum payment and never make any late payments. That number increases when you are late sending payments, thanks to the addition of “late fees”.

Some people attempt to play “credit roulette” to pay down their credit. This is a game where you take out a loan to pay off a credit card, or you transfer credit card debt from one card to another, hoping to take advantage of a lower interest rate or promotional offer. While this will work for awhile, eventually you will have difficulty getting new offers and places to transfer the debt to, or you'll miss the fine print on one of the offers and end up paying more interest than you thought, defeating the purpose of the balance transfer.

So how can the average individual pay off their credit card debt without bankruptcy, without joining a credit counseling service (some credit counseling services are very helpful, but beware of others who charge high fees to combine your credit card debt and end up costing you more money than you would have paid on your own!) and without having to get second and third jobs?

One of the best techniques for paying off credit card debt (and other debts as well, for that matter) is the snowball technique. In the same way that a snowball gathers more snow and grows as it rolls down a hill, your payments to your creditors will grow as you pay off one debt and then apply that payment to your next creditor.

Make a list of each of your creditors, including their minimum monthly payment, the total amount owed, and the interest rate you are being charged. The debt that has the least amount owed will be the first creditor you will concentrate on paying off. You'll pay the minimum amount owed on each of your accounts except for that one, sending as much as you can to this creditor to pay it off.

For example, let's say you have three credit cards. Credit card one has $7,000 owed at 20% interest, and a minimum monthly payment of $80, credit card two has $5,000 owed at 18% interest and a minimum monthly payment of $45, and credit card three has $2500 owed at 21% interest with a minimum monthly payment of $30. You're going to send minimum payments to credit card's one and two, and send as much as you can afford to credit card three, until it is completely paid off. Let's say you can afford to send $100 to credit card three. Once you've paid the account off, write the company and cancel the account. This removes it as ”available credit” on your credit report and helps your credit score. So now you have an additional $100 a month. You'll now concentrate on credit card two, which is now your lowest debt, now slightly less than $5,000. The payment you'll send to credit card two will be $145, since you had already been sending the minimum amount of $45, and you're adding the payment from the first card that you paid off. The snowball has gathered more snow! Now, once you've paid off your second credit card, you will have an additional $145 per month to send to your last credit card, to which you had already been sending $80. The new payment to credit card one is $225 per month- almost three times the minimum amount due.

Using the snowball technique is not an overnight solution, but you most likely didn't obtain all of this debt in one night, either! It is an easy method to apply, and will get you out of debt much faster and at less interest than if you just sent the minimum to each card every month, and works much more effectively than trying to send an additional few dollars to each account every month.

Ovarian cancer most commonly forms in the lining of the ovary (resulting in epithelial ovarian cancer) or in the egg cells (resulting in a germ cell tumor). Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death from cancer in women and the leading cause of death from gynecological cancer. A woman has a lifetime risk of ovarian cancer of around 1.5%, which makes it the second most common gynecologic malignancy (the first being breast cancer).

Ovarian cancer has been named 'the silent killer' because it frequently causes non-specific symptoms, which contribute to diagnostic delay, diagnosis in a late stage and a poor prognosis. Most women with ovarian cancer report one or more symptoms such as abdominal pain or discomfort, an abdominal mass, bloating, back pain, urinary urgency, constipation, tiredness and a range of other non-specific symptoms, as well as more specific symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding or involuntary weight loss. There can be a build-up of fluid in the abdominal cavity (this is called ascites).

The diagnosis of ovarian cancer can be suspected from an abnormal physical examination (including a pelvic examination), a blood test or from medical imaging studies. The diagnosis can be confirmed with a surgical procedure (open or keyhole surgery) to inspect the abdominal cavity, take biopsies (tissue samples for microscopic analysis) and look for cancer cells in the abdominal fluid. Treatment usually involves chemotherapy and surgery, and sometimes radiotherapy.

In most cases, the cause of ovarian cancer remains unknown. There is an increased risk of ovarian cancer in older women and in those who have a first or second degree relative with the disease. Hereditary forms of ovarian cancer can be caused by mutations in specific genes. Infertile women and those with a condition called endometriosis, those who have never been pregnant and those who use postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy are at increased risk. Use of oral contraceptive pills is a protective factor. The risk is also lower in women who have had their uterine tubes blocked surgically (tubal legation).

Xeroderma or Dry Skin is a very common condition. It happens more often in the winters where the cold air outside and the hot air inside creates a low relative humidity. This causes the skin to lose moisture and it maybe crack and peel. Bathing or showering frequency, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may also contribute to xeroderma. Xeroderma can be caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, vitamin D, systematic illness, extreme overexplosure to sunlight (sun burn), and underexplosure to sunlight, or some medication.

Xeroderma Expedosa or XP, is autosomal recessive genetic disorder of DNA repair in which the ability to repair demage caused by ultraviolet light (UV), is deficient. This disorder leads to multiple basaliomas and other skin malignancies at a young age. In severe case, it is necessary to avoid the sunlight completely. The two most common causes of death victim XP, are metastasis malignant megalomania, and squamous cell carcinoma. XP is about six times more common in Japanese people than in other groups.

Some of the most common XP symptoms include:

Development of many fleckless in an early age.
Irregular dark spots on the skin.
Thin skin.
Excessive dryness of skin.
Rough-surface growths (solar keratosas), and skin cancers.
Eyes that are painfully sensitive to the sun, and may easily become imitated, bloodshot, and clouded.
Blistering or flickering on minimum sun explosure.
Premature aging of skin, lips, eyes, mouth, and tongue.
Crusting skin.
Spidery blood vessels.
Scaly skin.
Oozing raw skin surface.
Limited on growth of hair on chest and legs.

More people now die of Melanoma in the UK than in Australia.

Skin cancer is most closely associated with chronic inflammation of the skin. This includes:

Overexposure to UV-radiation can cause skin cancer either via the direct DNA damage or via the indirect DNA damage mechanism. UVA & UVB have both been implicated in causing DNA damage resulting in cancer. Sun exposure between 10AM and 4PM is most intense and therefore most harmful. Natural (sun) & artificial UV exposure (tanning salons) are associated with skin cancer.[citation needed] Since sunbeds cause mostly indirect DNA damage (free radicals) their use is associated with the deadliest form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.[citation needed]
UVA rays affect the skin at a deeper level than UVB rays, reaching through the epidermis and the dermis to the hypodermis where connective tissues and blood vessels are located. UVA activates the melanin of the epidermis causing changes in pigmentation as well as loss of elasticity of the skin, which contributes to premature wrinkling, sagging and aging of the skin.
UVB rays primarily affect the epidermis causing sunburns, redness, and blistering of the skin. The melanin of the epidermis is activated with UVB just as with UVA; however, the effects are longer lasting with pigmentation continuing over 24 hours.
Chronic non-healing wounds, especially burns. These are called Marjolin's ulcers based on their appearance, and can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
Genetic predisposition, including "Congenital Melanocytic Nevi Syndrome". CMNS is characterized by the presence of "nevi" or moles of varying size that either appear at or within 6 months of birth. Nevi larger than 20 mm (3/4") in size are at higher risk for becoming cancerous.
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is often associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the genital, anal, oral, pharynx, and fingers. It is believed that the HPV vaccine might help to prevent these cancers as well as cervical cancers

Many believe that skin cancer can be prevented altogether by avoiding sunlight entirely, or wearing protective clothing while outdoors. However, studies show that Melanoma Skin Cancer is more common in those who work indoors. Skin Cancer is most common on areas of the body that are not normally exposed to the sun, and then exposing the skin to UV rays excessively.

Skin cancer generally has a 20- to 30-year latency period. Many instances of skin cancer in older individuals today can be traced to behaviours as young adults in the 1970s and early 1980s. Deep tans at that time were routinely spoken of as "healthy." Sunburns represented an inconvenient rite of spring or an awkward preliminary stage in the process of acquiring a "healthy" tan. Severe burns were commonplace. Today we know the approach to be reckless. The incidence rates of skin cancer today in persons over 50 years of age reflect that day's popular ignorance.

Smoking, particularly of cigarettes, is by far the main contributor to lung cancer. Across the developed world, almost 90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. In the United States, smoking is estimated to account for 87% of lung cancer cases (90% in men and 85% in women). Among male smokers, the lifetime risk of developing lung cancer is 17.2%; among female smokers, the risk is 11.6%. This risk is significantly lower in nonsmokers: 1.3% in men and 1.4% in women. Cigarette smoke contains over 60 known carcinogens, including radioisotopes from the radon decay sequence, nitrosamine, and benzopyrene. Additionally, nicotine appears to depress the immune response to malignant growths in exposed tissue.

The length of time a person smokes (as well as rate of smoking) increases the person's chance of developing lung cancer. If a person stops smoking, this chance steadily decreases as damage to the lungs is repaired and contaminant particles are gradually removed. In addition, there is evidence that lung cancer in never-smokers has a better prognosis than in smokers, and that patients who smoke at the time of diagnosis have shorter survival times than those who have quit.

Passive smoking—the inhalation of smoke from another's smoking—is a cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. A passive smoker can be classified as someone living or working with a smoker as well. Studies from the U.S., Europe, the UK, and Australia have consistently shown a significant increase in relative risk among those exposed to passive smoke. Recent investigation of side stream smoke suggests that it is more dangerous than direct smoke inhalation.

Asbestos can cause a variety of lung diseases, including lung cancer. There is a synergistic effect between tobacco smoking and asbestos in the formation of lung cancer. In the UK, asbestos accounts for 2–3% of male lung cancer deaths. Asbestos can also cause cancer of the pleura, called mesothelioma (which is different from lung cancer).

Sign and Symptoms

Symptoms that suggest lung cancer include:

dyspnea (shortness of breath)
hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
chronic coughing or change in regular coughing pattern
wheezing
chest pain or pain in the abdomen
cachexia (weight loss), fatigue, and loss of appetite
dysphonia (hoarse voice)
clubbing of the fingernails (uncommon)
dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).

If the cancer grows in the airway, it may obstruct airflow, causing breathing difficulties. This can lead to accumulation of secretions behind the blockage, predisposing the patient to pneumonia. Many lung cancers have a rich blood supply. The surface of the cancer may be fragile, leading to bleeding from the cancer into the airway. This blood may subsequently be coughed up.

Depending on the type of tumor, so-called paraneoplastic phenomena may initially attract attention to the disease. In lung cancer, these phenomena may include Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (muscle weakness due to auto-antibodies), hypercalcemia, or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Tumors in the top (apex) of the lung, known as Pancoast tumors, may invade the local part of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to changed sweating patterns and eye muscle problems (a combination known as Horner's syndrome) as well as muscle weakness in the hands due to invasion of the brachial plexus.

Many of the symptoms of lung cancer (bone pain, fever, and weight loss) are nonspecific; in the elderly, these may be attributed to comorbid illness. In many patients, the cancer has already spread beyond the original site by the time they have symptoms and seek medical attention. Common sites of metastasis include the bone, such as the spine (causing back pain and occasionally spinal cord compression); the liver; and the brain. About 10% of people with lung cancer do not have symptoms at diagnosis; these cancers are incidentally found on routine chest x-rays.
